With today's technology it is now possible to install efficient prepaid meters based on smart cards. Electric companies can now issue pre-loaded smart cards. The consumer can buy the cards at post offices, banks or directly from the electric company.

• When the card is inserted into the meter, the value is downloaded into the microcontroller in the meter.

• The money value is converted to units, depending on the current rate.

• When the meter uses 75% of the units, a warning light will go on to indicate that the meter needs to be reloaded.
